I will concede that the only merit kzramazovi this work is how it differed from his other tome’s, because typically, writers adhere to one type of theme and don’t part far from it. So it’s not the Russian aspect, it’s not the time period, it’s not the length of the book it’s the 6th book over pages I’ve read in it’s not even the author I don’t like. And even THAT is preceded by ten paragraphs of needless throat-clearing and chest-thumping.

I kept trying to hang in there to be left in awe at the end, but it’s very anti-climatic and long-winded and 9 out of every 10 pages are unnecessary. Dostoyevsky spent four years in hard labor and four years as a soldier in Semipalatinsk, a city in what it is today Kazakhstan.

And that frustration lead me away from bdaca other reading material.

So why did I even want to read the book? He was just deprived of the luxuries to him, they were luxuries that the name Karamazov gave to Ivan. But that’s not true, because I liked Crime and Punishment when I read it for high school with a teacher who called it her favorite book of all time, and I loved Dr Zhivago.

Some of it was fantastic, and then it crumbled and crashed into an awful conclusion. Even though Fyodor Karamazov was the worst a father could be, his legitimate sons enjoyed certain privileges that Smerdyakov did not. And then the treatises. The man who lies to himself and listens to his own lie comes to a point that he cannot distinguish the truth within him, or around him, and so loses all respect for himself and for others.


To be fair, now that I am a little older and medicated, I should reread this book. If we were to meet at a party, I don’t think we would like each other. By the time of The Brothers KaramazovDostoyevsky was recognized in his own country as one of its great writers.

And I did enjoy some of the set pieces – the drunken party, taut with simmering emotions, the sizzle of sex in the air mixed with soporific slurring; the trial, where the lawyers seek to outdo one another by dreaming up fantastical hypotheticals and dabbling idly in amateur psychology. None of them seem to have a semi-rational mind with the ability to stay sane for half a minute. And then the trial that went on for far too many pages and served mainly to repeat with very slight twists what had already happened during the book.

I don’t quite get the rave reviews about this book. I haven’t completed all of FD’s works, but everyth has started out as a real crapper on the reading front. I like Crime and Punishment better. Though by the end of the novel do not be surprised if you are finding pieces of yourself in each and every character.
