Clea is the fourth and final installment of Lawrence Durrell ‘s Alexandria Quartet. At first this final book in the series didn’t hold up as much as the other 3 because requited love can be boring compared to the angst of requited. First American Edition, First Printing. When Darley arrives in Alexandria, almost immediately he runs into his old artist friend Clea, and consummates a formerly Plutonic relationship, now that their circle of friends is unencumbered by the presence of Melissa, who has died, and Justine, who is under house arrest for the duration of the novel.

There is a long excursus in the middle of the book ostensibly taken from the journals of the novelist Pursewarden, in which he describes his impressions of Darley.

I have really adored being emersed in the lives of this group of individuals, thrown together through public and political life in a backdrop of exotic Egyptian locations and traditions starting in the romantic ‘s through to wartime.
